You're Jewish, right? Now, if it won't offend *your* faith, could you do something like wear "Jewish" stuff (even if the situation is incorrect), like that white shawl with the blue stripes, and a yarmulka/skullcaps/kippah? Could you sit right behind her, and read the torah out loud? (How's your Hebrew?)

I'd recommend your colleague discretely ask at the school board... she doesn't want to get your boss really pissed at her, but I think your boss is out of line.

That being said, schools have some pretty *stupid* rules about time off... like here, how if the weather is so bad that the school buses can't run, the teachers still have to show up. And, when my mom asked if her (at the time partner, now husband) could have a day off to attend her aunt's funeral, the administrator said "next thing you know, people will want time off to attend a *friend's* funeral! (Because it was out of town, mom was allowed to take two days... since it was next to a weekend, she could get by with one day off, and share the other with her partner. They both worked for the same school division.)

I would have to agree with the other two commenters about the personal leave. Sucks, but it's true. I guess I'm just not understanding why they would require you to attend a RELIGIOUS "field trip" on a day that you would normal either be off for a holiday or in a professional developmnet workshop. I mean, this is not even your religion!

Wow. Scooby Doo bewilderment, indeed. I am not an expert on the legalities of this situation, nor do I play one on t.v., but this certainly seems off by more than a bit.

Well, I won't get the two of us in trouble by driving down and sneaking you out, but it is more than a little tempting. Alas, I am fortunate to be someone who gets caught when doing the wrong thing.

I hope you can bring some yarn and hooks or needles to help pass the bus ride. I would recommend something like plain stockinette or ribbed socks. Cast on now, (unless you already have one in waiting) knit a few rounds, and then put it in its bag to wait for the fifteenth. Either that, or maybe a simple dishcloth would be good accompaniment.

I know the mojo is not nearby, but knitting or crocheting can still be good companions in these times. You may not get the same enjoyment, but they still serve a purpose and can really help.

Employers do have a say over personal day usage - remember, they don't have to give any. On the other hand, requiring staff to go on a religious trip? Do you work for a parochial school of some ilk?
