Friday Fill-In 4/30/10
1. I was standing on the street as quiet as could be when a great big ugly man came up and tied his horse to me. (This is from a book of limerick type poems my mother used to read to me. This is not a direct quote, I had to make it fit the prompt.)

4. My husband was in my thoughts today.
5. One of my father's favorite sayings was quit your bellyaching.
6. Wanting to knit, but having a hand injury?--I know that feeling!
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to alone time and attempting to knit (not sure about the hand, though), tomorrow my plans include buying a new pair of tennis shoes and Sunday, I want to figure out something to do!

Knit and Crochet Blog Week Day 5
Again, there were all kinds of awesome posts out there yesterday. After reading Trish's post, I realized there were two skills I want to improve on: gauge and seaming.
I was also surprised by the number of bloggers who listed knitting continental...mainly so colorwork would be easier. I knit continental, yet have no desire to do colorwork. Oh the irony!

Where do you like to indulge in your craft? Is your favorite arm chair your little knitting cubby area, or do you prefer to ‘knit in public’? Do you like to crochet in the great outdoors, perhaps, or knit in the bath, or at the pub?
Top spot: On the couch. Usually with a feline companion.

Knit & Crochet Blog Week Day 4
May I just say before I begin, that I spent most of yesterday evening reading posts of other participants and saying "Oh yeah! Why didn't I think of that great knitter?"
Now on to Day 4...
A New Skill
Is there a skill related to your hobby that you hope to learn one day? maybe you’re a crocheter who’d also like to knit? Maybe you’d like to learn to knit continental, knit backwards, try cables or attempt stranded colourwork.
I don't know that it is a skill one can learn, but I really envy designers. I admire folks who can make wonderful things with no pattern. I am so unimaginative. I don't think I could ever do that. Yes, I've got links to some free patterns (look up) and I had a scarf featured in the 2007 Crochet Pattern-a-Day calender...but I would hardly call myself a designer. Two scarves and stockinette stitch Thneeds? Nah, that's not designing.
So to all those fabulous designers out there: I salute you and thank you. Without your skills, there would be no patterns and pattern dependent knitters like me would have nothing to do.

K&CBW Day 3- Mish Mash Addendum
After reading Yarnpiggy's Day 3 post, I felt ashamed. How could I forget my local knit friends? Of course, writing about them now just makes me a copycat, but I'll just have to be a copycat. (What's that saying about imitation and flattery?)
- We have nothing in common yet at the same time we have everything in common. I
- know that we have different views on many subjects, but knitting brings us together and we can put those differences aside for the sake of Knit Nite.
- Knit Nite began about 3 or 4 years ago and from it came the South Alabama Fiber Enthusiast's Guild. I don't know why, but it just tickles me that we went from being a group of ladies that met once a week to a legit guild. And we all did it together.
- Most of us are process knitters, but we still churn out a lot of product.
- If one lady doesn't know something, another surely will.
- No one minds that I am a curmudgeon and in fact I am encouraged to be one!
- They really encourage me in my knitting endeavors and help me make decisions.

Knit and Crochet Blog Week Day 2-Patterns on Pedestals
An Inspirational Pattern
Blog about a pattern or project which you aspire to. Whether it happens to be because the skills needed are ones which you have not yet acquired, or just because it seems like a huge undertaking of time and dedication, most people feel they still have something to aspire to in their craft. If you don’t feel like you have any left of the mountain of learning yet to climb, say so!
Oh my. This might be hard.
I would say the pattern or project I aspire to is...the next one.
I honestly can't think of a pattern or project that I have put on a pedestal and thought "One day..." Not one that made me say "If only I could..." There are plenty I admire. If I really like something, I will give it a whirl, no matter the technique. If I choose not to do something, it's not the technique that keeps me from casting on. There are few techniques that I really want to make the effort to learn. (Please see blog title above. It does include the word "lazy".) So if I'm not working on intricate cabled pieces or gossamer lace shawls, it's not because I don't think I'm capable...I'm just too lazy to mess with it. And since I'm so lazy, I aspire to just get something started on most days.

Starting Out
How and when did you begin knitting/crocheting? Was it a skill passed down through generations of your family, or something you learned from Knitting For Dummies? What or who made you pick up the needles/hook for the first time? Was it the celebrity knitting ‘trend’ or your great aunt Hilda?
No one in my immediate family was crafty; although my aunt crocheted ripple afghans for my brother, my sister and me when I was quite young. My brother's made of browns, my sister shades of yellow (which included the ubiquitous shade of goldenrod) and I received a blanket of pinks. I don't know that tía ever made another hand stitched project again.
When I was around 10? 11? (maybe as late as 12?) I got it into my head that I wanted to learn to crochet. Perhaps those afghans had something to do with it. I don't know. Here is where my memory plays tricks on me. I distinctly remember looking up "crochet" in the World Book Encyclopedia, but I also distinctly remember a family friend teaching her daughter to crochet...and then my next memory I'm working on a huge black and red granny square. (I just kept going around and around and around. My father used it as a seat cover on a recliner for years.) I don't; however, have a distinct memory of being taught or teaching myself...so I guess sometime between these two memories I learned how.
The same is true for knitting. Around the time I picked up crochet, I have a vague memory of looking up knitting in the encyclopedia and that same family friend was knitting a Christmas stocking. The next thing I remember it's 15+ years later and I'm knitting a sweater out of Lustersheen and it ends up hanging to my knees (which actually worked well with the pair of black leggings I had at the time.) Ironically, today the idea of knitting a sweater in pieces and seaming it all together makes me want to puke. How is it I've gotten more afraid as I've gotten older? Anyway, like crochet, I have no distinct memory of teaching myself or of being taught to knit.
I find it odd that I have knit and crochet magazines from the 80's and early 90's. So I've been collecting magazines and patterns longer than I've been actively crafting*. It wasn't until 2004 that I really picked up crocheting again. Soon after that, knitting. Then, in 2005, blogging (which was really a wild hair of an idea.)
So there you have it: the beginnings.
*I must be a pre-process knitter to the extreme.

Smarter Than I Thought/Más Inteligente que Pensé
So when I decided that I would become an expert at finishing things and overcoming my knitting fears, I didn't realize that pretty much any project could be counted toward the 10kH.
How?
Let's say I am working on a mindless project like this baby blanket. Obviously, it can't count toward overcoming knit fears...1. it's crochet and 2. I can do this with my eyes shut...literally. However; if I finish it, it counts toward finishing things. I'm brilliant! I can count anything I work on as long as I finish it!
And while I've got you here, let me show you a sneak peek of the Multnomah I just finished. I'll be taking pictures in natural light tomorrow, but I hate to leave you without any knitting content.
Now I'm off to update my hours...Multnomah took 11.6 hours. (No, I don't think I knit it that fast, I think I had already started it when I took the 10kH challenge.)

Y porque Uds. están aquí, voy a compartir una miradita de Multnomah que acabo de terminar (foto arriba.) Voy a tomar fotos mejores mañana con iluminación mejor. No quería salir sin diciendo nada de tejer.

10kH Plans/Planes de 10kH
I think that to just say "I'm going to knit for 10,000 hours" really defeats the purpose of the exercise. I'm supposed to do something for 10,000 hours to become an expert at something. So here is what I propose to myself: Knit for 10,000 hours so I become an expert at finishing projects. Knit for 10,000 hours so I become an expert at not fearing a project.
What does this mean?
Creo que necesito hacer más que solo tejer por 10,000 horas. El propósito del ejercicio es de hacerse experto en algo. Propongo a mí misma lo siguiente: A Tejer por 10,000 horas para hacerme experto en terminar proyectos. A Tejer por 10,000 horas para hacerme experto en no tener miedo de un proyecto.
¿Qué voy a hacer?

- I won't record the hours until the project is finished (for example: I've got about 7 hours in a project right now, but it's isn't finished, so I haven't updated the sidebar.)
- I will choose projects that contain elements I have traditionally feared, such as lace.

I read about this un-official "-along" on Ida's blog, but she discovered it at Junebug on a String (written by Ellie Metz of Lime and Violet fame.) I hemmed and hawed until now (12:21 AM on Saturday) so I am late in getting started, but I didn't want to disappoint you guys and actually do something on time. Ya'll have come to depend on my inability to be punctual and in these uncertain times we all need some semblance of order, right?
*ahem* Moving on.
Ida decided to focus on becoming an expert on socks and blogging. I think I'm going to be vague and just say I'm going to knit for 10,000 hours and leave it at that. Ok? Ellie seemed pretty laid back about it all, so I figure I'm well within the rules.
So...yeah. Knitting a lot. I sooo got this.

A Post of Little Substance/Un Post Sin Sustancia
Well, here I am. I want to to blog regularly, but I really have nothing to report. I wake up. I work. I go home. I go to bed.
I would like to thank everyone for their comments and encouragement on my new "bilingual blog" project. Big hugs for everyone!

I think I will have to make more shawls. Especially lace. I love watching what blocking does to a lace pattern. I've seen it on blogs, but in person is just amazing.

Creo que tendré que hacer más chales. Escpecialmente de puntilla. Me gusta como el "bloqueando" arregla los puntos del diseño. Es mágico. Lo he visto en otros blogs y en fotos, pero in vivo es increíble.

I think I will have to make more shawls. Especially lace. I love watching what blocking does to a lace pattern. I've seen it on blogs, but in person is just amazing.

- I'm hanging out in the common rooms at the Harry Potter Knit/Crochet House Cup group.
- I found the Post Mortem Paranoid Thread Wanderers group. Just.Check.It.Out. Deliciously random and rambling.
- I now know that you can "fave" a post. (Who knew? Yeah, I know...all of you did. I'm on the dumb end of the learning curve.)
- My activity in forums/groups has actually cut into my knitting time.
- I discovered I had 427 friends on ravelry.
- No one needs that many friends.
- I had to do some weeding.
- I'm 187 friends lighter.
- I hope I didn't piss anyone off.
- Paso mucho tiempo en las salas comunes en el groupo HPKCHC.
- Descubrí el grupo Post-Mortem Paranoid Thread Wanderers group. Visítenlo. Muy desorganizado y divagado.
- Ahora yo sé que se puede marcar un post como "favorito". (¿Quién sabe? Si, yo sé ...todos saben. Pero estoy en el lado "tonta" de la curva de aprendizaje.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to alone time, tomorrow my plans include visiting my in-laws and Sunday, I want to knit!

Recently I've begun to wonder if I should change the blog to a bilingual one, writing in both English and Spanish. But I'm not sure.
For now I will limit the use of Spanish and see how it goes.
Hace poco que empecé a pensar que tal vez debo convertir el blog a un blog bilingüe, escribiendo en ingés y español. Pero no estoy segura.
Por ahora, voy a limitar el uso de español y a ver como lo pase.
It Doesn't Count/Eso No Cuenta
This month at the Guild meeting we had a yarn swap. I did not buy yarn and that is a very important distinction. I also got rid of a lot of my yarn, so ultimately the amount of yarn in my stash was reduced. Besides, could you have resisted this?:
Este mes durante la reunión del Guild, había un intercambio de lana/hilo/madejas. No compré nada y este es muy importante. También me liberé de muchas madejas y la cantidad de ésas en mi "colección" es ahora más pequeña. Además, ¿podrías tú resistir?:
A couple skeins of sock yarn, a little dishcloth cotton and a whole lotta laceweight acrylic. (I'm not entirely sure what to do with the acrylic, though.)
Dos madejitas de lana de calcetín, una de algodón para hacer paños, y un montón de acrílico para puntilla/encaje. (Aunque no sé qué voy a hacer con el acrílico)
April Goals/Metas Para Abril
I was pretty successful with three goals last month. I'll attempt 4 this month.
A couple of months ago, I had another giveaway idea: Markers in March. I would make and send a couple of stitch markers to any reader who requested them.
Well, here we are....in April. But I will offer them to you anyway (and be on time next year.) Leave a comment or e-mail me by April 15th and I'll get them out by April 30th. (Because my bead supply is not extensive, this offer is limited to the first 10 readers and I'll choose the colors.)
Hace unos meses que tuve la idea de tener otro...¿cuál es la palabra...Tirado?: Marcadores en Marzo. Haría y mandaría un par de marcadores a cualquier lector que los piden.
Pues, aquí estamos...en abril. Pero voy a ofrecerlos de todos modos. Dejen un comentario or madénme un e-mail (enlace arriba...soy perezosa) antes del 15 de Abril y los mandaré antes del 30. (Porque no tengo muchos abalorios, este oferta se limite al primeros 10 lectores y yo escogeré los colores.)

SAFE Happenings
In May the S.A.F.E Guild will have an exhibit of members' projects as part of the Jubilee City Fest. Most of our meeting last night was taken up with naming said exhibit. We quickly came up with "Warped, Twisted and Tangled:..." and then we needed a sub line.
"A New Generation of Fiber Art" was suggested but vetoed. We weren't sure it really explained what it was...since the average schmoe on the street equates fiber with diet.
Next came "A New Generation of Handicrafts". It met with a lukewarm reception.
"A New Generation of Handwork" was mentioned. It got a few nods.
Finally, I proposed "A New Generation of Hand Jobs" It got a lot of laughs, but was sadly discarded.

A Knitting Pet Peeve
I see so many patterns in which the size difference between S and M is 4 inches, the M to L increment is 2 inches. Why can't the S to M difference be 2 inches? Check this out. XS size to fit 30" bust; S to fit 34" bust; M to fit 36" bust. Not to get too personal, but I have a 32" inch bust. Memo to designers: I don't like to do math...and I assume many knitters agree. Please be consistent with your size increments.
Maybe my tagline should be something like "The Whiniest Blog on the 'Net".
