Yesterday I was speaking to a young man (early to mid 20's) and I asked him if he would consider making our fair city his home for a while. He is an excellent teacher and cares deeply for our students. His response was non-committal and he said the state was a little too "red" for him. He's always wanted to live in Seattle.
This kind of stuff always burns me up. In the last 2 years, I've met young people who speak of changing the world and then go off to live where everyone thinks like they do. How do you change anything if you don't stay where change is most needed?
Are there narrow minded biggots where I live? Yup. You betcha. And ironically, most of them seem younger than I am. So what do I do? I stay here and try to be an example for others. Maybe I suck at it. I don't know, but at least I'm trying to be the change I want to see in the world.*
Things I'm thinking about...
